Purpose of Practicum

Conduct this practicum to improve pedagogical knowledge and improve teaching skills. This practicum also trains me to manage classes well, design good learning model ideas, and train me to make learning designs well.


Procedures of practicum

1. Observation

Observations are made to observe all aspects that exist in the school starting from, learning models, teaching procedures, teaching time, characteristics of students, school facilities and so forth. The results of these observations are used to determine the learning model that will be used in teaching practice.

2. Teaching assistant

Teaching assistant is an activity to help the cooperating teacher while teaching. The goal is for student teachers to get information on ways to teach well before doing their own teaching practice.

3. Practice teaching

In this activity the student teacher does the actual teaching practice. The student teacher teaches as if being a real teacher. In this activity the student teacher teaches according to the topic directed by the cooperating teacher. Besides tu, when teaching is done according to the lesson plan that has been made.

4. Evaluation

At this stage, the cooperating teacher evaluates all the results of the teaching practice carried out by the student teacher. Evaluating is done by filling out the evaluation form provided by the student teacher from Seameo and from the school.


Outcomes of practicum

The results of this lab are:

1. Get a lot of knowledge about how to teach well, starting from making lesson plans to how to teach well.

2. Train public speaking well because the teacher must be able to communicate well with students and others.

3. Get a lot of new knowledge about the curriculum at USANT, the learning methods that are there, and the learning model.


The challenges of practicum

 For me the challenges I faced during practicum were:

1. I have to sharpen my skills to speak English well. In the Philippines the English language is their second main language, but my English language skills are still small so I have to learn English more.

2. When I run this program there are a lot of schedules that have to be done every week such as visiting historic sights, where leaders are there, visiting seminars that are usually on weekends, plus assignments from my campus. So managing the time between preparing to teach, attending events, and working on assignments is rather difficult for me.

3. There have projector technology but with a small amount, even though the projector is very much needed when teaching such as displaying images or videos. In addition, when I want to invite students to do online quizzes, it cannot be done because of the limited internet connection and not all students have a cellphone or laptop.

4. I studied Chemistry Education, so my basic knowledge was chemistry. However, in this program I taught general science and taught about climate and stars. So that I did not understand this material initially. So I have to learn from the beginning to the whole so I have to prepare more time for that.

5. For a Muslim like me who has difficulty in finding halal food, then when we look for food it is quite difficult so we have to buy food to cook ourselves. That made us have to provide more time to go to the market and cook food.


Overall Impression

My impression after joining this program was that I had an amazing experience and I will never forget it. This experience was also very useful for me going forward because I was studying chemistry education, surely after graduating the biggest outcast I would work as a teacher. The knowledge I get from this program will continue to be used and I share with my friends at the university. Not to forget also with my new friends who come from Thailand and the Philippines, with them I get new knowledge starting from the language and culture of their culture.


Suggestion for Future Improvement

my suggestion for the future is to prepare SEA-teacher participants to better prepare themselves long before the program starts. The intended preparation is what learning material will be used to teach there so that when teaching there more leverage. But for the overall running of the program it has been good.
